SPID SMART – (Skill for Market Training) Programmes

SPID has observed that there is an increasing concern about the unemployment in the poor urban society. It was also observed that the number of underprivileged youths in India who lacks proper education and guidance is so huge that it gradually piles up the increased number of unemployability in the society. 

The unemployability is again the concern of various social problems. At the same time, it is crucial for the energy of the under-privileged youths to be channelized properly with proper direction to aid economic growth and nation building to elude their addition to family woes, social stress and national misery. SPID’s SMART training centres I and II aims at creating a pool of young and independent people, from a section of under-privileged youths through skill enhancement keeping in tune with the market demand.

The programme is supported by Tech Mahindra CSR initiative. It is an effort to bridge the gap between the demand and the supply of skilled people power in the fast-emerging services and retail sector of our country. SPID is running two skill development centres one each in Uttam Nagar and Nagloi area of New Delhi. The programme caters theneed of the people between age group of 18-35 and they should be at least class 10th pass out.

Two types of courses are being offered to the beneficiaries with no cost and of four months duration. The courses are Office Administration (OA) and Customer Relations and Sales (CRS). The skills involved English speaking, IT skills, personality development, Interview cracking skill, work place readiness and communication skill. The students are taught by professionals who are also involved in market research. In total 1380 students have benefited from the programme.  

Since 2015, every year approximately 480 youths are enrolled in the skill development programmes and 100% of them are employed in various offices and retails sectors.

The beneficiaries are also empowered to fight against various social issues and are taught about their rights, community issues and how to solve the same through play, meetings and discussions.

SPID Vocational Training Centre

SPID in its project areas in Delhi has realized the need to make the young women financially self-reliant. To cater the needs of the young women who are already enrolled in the SPID women empowerment programme SPID started vocational course on stitching and embroidery in 2009.

The women who are illiterate or having minimum qualification get an opportunity to earn livelihood through cutting and tailoring. For such women, tailoring provides an easiest way to generate an income of their own. Through SPID training centres, we intend to make women confident and self-reliant. By learning this skill, the women are able to continue their work even from home by allowing themselves to take care of their children also.

Financial independence and self-reliance contribute to women empowerment and help them reinforce their social status. Through this course the women learn the art of embroidery, designing cloths and stitching. Depending upon their interest they can learn basic teaching and go for advance courses on the same. SPID provide theoretical as well as practical classes to the beneficiaries.

SPID also conduct surveys in the urban slums to encourage women, girls and their parents to pursue their training in order to secure a source of income. In total 2000 women have already benefited from the programme. At present SPID vocational training centre has 22 beneficiaries learning the tailoring course. The training is provided by professionals and at the completion of the course they are given certificate of appreciation.

As a part of vocational programme SPID also organises:

  • Health Camp

  • Information on healthy nutrition

  • Awareness camp on wash

  • Non-formal education for women

  • Formation of Self-Help Group (SHGs)

  • Creation vigilant group in the community to report violence issues to the concerned authority

  • Awareness desk to facilitate information on government schemes and programmes
